#Askprofyeow:Top 5 FAQ On Double Eyelid Surgery

Will double eyelid crease disappear after a non-incisional eyelid surgery? What can you expect after a double eyelid surgery? Are these questions on your mind? Our Q&A program – #Askprofyeow, has compiled the top 5 FAQ on double eyelid surgery just for you!

1. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DOUBLE EYELID SURGERY METHODS?

There are two main methods.

A. Non-incisional suture method

The non-incisional method uses sutures to create natural double eyelids without leaving surgery lines. It is usually done through a small incision of 1mm and the sutures are placed beneath the skin in a weaving pattern to create double eyelids. The suture method can create lasting results until the skin starts hooding due to age or muscle laxity issues. Most patients prefer the suture method because of the short recovery period which typically range between 3 to 5 days.

B. Incisional method

The incisional method provides the advantage for more variation in the final height and shape of the eyelid crease. It is usually done through a parallel incision above the upper lash line. This procedure removes drooped or excessive skin, fat, and muscle. Hollowed skin and fat as well as heavy and thick muscles can be trimmed off to correct think, puffy looking eyelids. Individuals with sagging skin, thick muscles or fat layers, will benefit most from this procedure.

2. I HEARD THAT THE DOUBLE EYELID CREASE WILL DISAPPEAR IF YOU’VE HAD DONE NON-INCISIONAL DOUBLE EYELID TECHNIQUE. IS THIS TRUE?

This is a common misconception people have about non-incisional techniques. The techniques have evolved and improved over time. We’ve moved on from the old techniques because the results were not as consistent and there was a higher possibility of losing the crease over time. We use sutures to weave out what looks like a horizontally stretched ovals to create a deeper and more defined crease. This results in more consistent and longer lasting results.

3. WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER A DOUBLE EYELID SURGERY?

For non-incisional double eyelid surgery, one will need to expect swelling, occasional bruising, and in some cases, temporary eye irritation.

On the other hand, for incisional double eyelid surgery, one will need to expect more swelling and bruising as well as a longer recovery time. There will be a faint scar along the upper eyelid crease, which will be less obvious over time.

4. IS THERE A REVOLUTIONARY ‘PERFECT METHOD’ FOR A DOUBLE EYELID SURGERY?

There are no perfect methods but each surgery has its own pros and cons. Hence, it is wise to determine which procedure best suits you. You should seek a plastic surgeon’s advice on that.

5. I AM CONSIDERING TO GO FOR LASIK. DOES THIS LIMIT MY OPTIONS?

Lasik does not affect your decision to go for double eyelid procedure and you still have the flexibility to choose between suture or incisional method. If you intend to have both procedures done within a short period of time, do make sure you schedule your eyelid surgery after lasik. Those who prefer to go for double eyelid surgery first should schedule their lasik procedure at least one month later, or when your surgeon gives you the green light.
