Surgery For Double Eyelid In Singapore – Know If You’re An Ideal Candidate

Your eyes may be the windows to your soul, but have you ever thought about your eyelids? You may not have put much thought into something so trivial. Eyelids, like most features in this wide world, come in many different variations. They can change the appearance of your entire face. It may not seem a big deal to some but not having a particular type of eyelid can cause much stress and worry to others. Double eyelid surgery in Singapore is a procedure that can help you achieve your desired eyelid crease and enhance the shape of your eye.

Types Of Eyelids

monolids versus double eyelid

When it comes to “types of eyelids,” you may have heard many terms being thrown around- non-continuous crease, partial crease, multiple creases, tapered crease, parallel crease, etc. But it all boils down to two types- double eyelids and monolids.

Double eyelids have a visible skin crease above the upper eyelid. This crease distinctly separates the upper eyelid from the skin below the eyebrow.

Monolids, on the other hand, lack this skin crease between the eyebrows and the eyelashes. The difference between these two types is mainly cosmetic and typically does not affect your vision.

 The Appeal Of Double Eyelids

Most people in Asia have monolids, while people in the Western world have double eyelids. While double eyelids are in no ways superior to monolids, it is increasingly appealing to people for many reasons.

Monolids can make your make-up application process more challenging. Eyeliner and eyeshadow are notoriously difficult to apply. Not having a proper eyelid to work with makes the process even tougher.

The more pressing issue with monolids is that they give a person hooded eyes and a perpetually bored, tired or sometimes, sleepy expression. Double eyelids make your eyes look bigger and contribute to a more alert expression.

What Is Double Eyelid Surgery

Double eyelid surgery in Singapore or “upper lid blepharoplasty” is a surgical procedure that creates a crease in the upper eyelid, thereby converting a monolid to a double eyelid. This procedure has been around for many years, and it is the most common aesthetic surgery performed in East Asia . It is performed on both sexes.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Double Eyelid Surgery

Double eyelid surgery in Singapore is usually performed for cosmetic reasons. If you have monolids, you can opt for double eyelid surgery. It results in more symmetric, almond-shaped, bigger eyes as opposed to the hooded eyes given by monolids.

types of eyelid concerns

Some people are in between monolids and double eyelids. Double eyelid surgery can be used to help them create a more obvious crease. Some people may have one monolid and one double eyelid. Double eyelid surgery helps them get more symmetric eyes. Double eyelid surgery can also be used to remove excess fat in the upper eyelid, which can make your eyes look puffy.

Double eyelid surgery in Singapore can be used for non-cosmetic reasons as well. If you have an excessively droopy eyelid due to a structural issue (ptosis) or ingrowing eyelashes that irritate your cornea (trichiasis), double eyelid surgery can be used to correct it.

How Many Options Are There When It Comes To Double Eyelid Surgery?

There are two main types of double eyelid surgery:

  1. The non-cutting method, also known as the suture method
  2. The cutting method, also known as the incisional method

Your doctor will choose the method most suited to you, depending on your preference and individual needs.

Suture Double Eyelid Technique

This non-incisional method is quick, requires no downtime, causes minimum swelling, and will not leave a scar. Hence, it is one of the most popular methods around. It is ideal for people who do not have excess fat or skin in their eyelids.

non incisional double eyelid surgery process

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Your plastic surgeon makes tiny holes in the eyelid skin. Then they pass sutures through these holes and bury the sutures under your eyelid skin. These sutures will mimic the fibrous attachments naturally present in double eyelids and help to create that oh-so-coveted crease. The whole procedure takes 20-30 mins overall, and you can just walk out of your doctor’s office when you’re done.

The downside of this method is that the double eyelid fold may become less prominent over time as the skin around the eye ages, and the eyelid fold can become smaller. The suture technique is also reversible in cases where patients cannot get used to their new look.

Incisional Double Eyelid Surgery Technique

This method is more invasive as it involves cutting into your eyelid skin. It should come as no surprise that incisional double eyelid surgery is less popular than the non-incisional method. However, it creates a permanent and more defined eyelid crease.

The procedure is performed under sedation. Your plastic surgeon makes a full-length cut (incision) along the new eyelid crease.  As before, the surgeon uses sutures to achieve double eyelids. Finally, the incision is closed using surgical sutures, pinning the skin down to the muscles to create a neat eyelid crease.

The incisional method is versatile and allows your doctor to manipulate your eyelid crease more and create a specific eye shape. Your doctor can also excise any excess skin hanging over and remove excess fat as needed to achieve the results you are after.

Since an incision is made on your skin, there will be a scar on the eyelid. Scars are hidden along the crease line so it’s not visible when the eyes are open. A faint line where the eyelid crease is present may be seen when the eyes are closed, but that will improve and blend in with the surrounding skin over time.

Two types of incisions can be made:

  1. Full incision
  2. Partial incisionincisional double eyelid surgery process

In a full incision, your surgeon will create an incision along the entire length of your new eyelid crease. It is suitable for people with excess fat and skin in their eyelids. This method creates a permanent eyelid crease, but it involves 2 weeks of downtime due to swelling.

In a partial incision, your surgeon will create an incision along the upper border of your new eyelid crease, but he will keep it as short as possible. It is suitable for people with excess fat but no excess skin in their eyelids or for people who have neither excess fat nor skin but want a more permanent solution than the non-incisional method. It produces less scarring and less swelling than the full incision method.

Can I Determine How I Like My Eyelids To Be?

You have the freedom to choose the height and the shape of your eyelid crease that will best suit your face.

Crease Type

tapered versus parallel eyelid crease

There are two main crease types in double eyelid surgery in Singapore-

  1. Tapered
  2. Parallel

The tapered crease meets on the corner of your eye near your nose and widens on the outside. You can also decide the degree of tapering.

The parallel crease runs parallel to the shape of your eye and is at an equal height from the inner and outer corners of your eye.

Crease Height

options for double eyelid crease height

The crease height is the distance from the crease to your lash line when your eye is closed. You can choose from a low crease (6-7 mm from the lash line), a medium crease (7-8 mm), and a high crease (9-10 mm).

Benefits Of Double Eyelid Surgery

Double eyelid surgery enhances your aesthetic appearance. It can make your eyes more symmetrical and more almond-shaped, leading to a more pleasing appearance.

Eye make-up application becomes significantly easier with double eyelid surgery. Now that you have an eyelid to work with, applying eyeshadow and eyeliner is much less complicated.

Double eyelid surgery can also help make your face look more alert as opposed to the sleepy look you get with monolids. Gone are the days where you have to convince people you aren’t tired, it’s just your eyes! It also helps to reduce the eye puffiness by removing excess fat in the eyelids.

Double eyelid surgery can also help you see better, especially if your eyelids are droopy and interfering with your vision. It can also help with inward growing lashes that make it hard to wear contact lenses.

Cost

The price of suture double eyelid surgery starts at $3900 and that of incisional double eyelid surgery at $5000.

The price of double eyelid surgery in Singapore depends on various factors like the experience of the doctor, the clinic, and the complexity of the procedure. Keep in mind that additional fees may be incurred for aftercare, drugs and consultations.

Conclusions

Always remember that no two surgeries are alike, and consultation is essential before opting for surgery. Your doctor will thoroughly assess your preferences and individual needs before determining what procedure is best for you. Therefore, always consult a consultant plastic surgeon before going for Singapore double eyelid surgery.
