What is nipple reduction surgery and who needs it?

Nipple reduction surgery is a surgical procedure used for correcting abnormally big or retracted nipples to achieve an ideal size and shape. Though the nipple functions are not affected, many individuals choose to undergo this surgery for aesthetic concerns.

Nipple hypertrophy is a condition that is mostly acquired after certain life changes or experiences, like nipple enlargement as a result of breastfeeding, but in some patients the large nipples come congenitally.

When the reduction surgery is performed, the excessive nipple tissues are removed, after which a suture is used to fix it in its new shape. The procedure scars are hardly visibly and has very minimal side effects after the procedure. Generally, patients can return to their routine life activities right after the surgery.

Who needs nipple reduction surgery?

Nipple surgery is recommended for individuals with:

  • Nipples which are too large for their breast size
  • Outgrown and sagging nipples after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding
  • Nipples of varying size on both sides

Nipple reduction surgery method

There are two surgery methods used and the surgeon will recommend the ideal technique depending on the patient’s condition and the results desired.

1. In case of a wide nipple

This is an ideal technique for:

  • Reducing width
  • Not affecting future breast feeding potential

During the procedure, the surgeon excises a fraction of patient’s nipple and sutures it for reducing the width.

2. In the case of a long nipple

This is an ideal technique for:

  • Reducing width
  • Reducing length
  • Not affecting future breast feeding potential

In this procedure, the length of the nipple is shortened by removing any excessive tissue. After that, the nipple is sutured back again to the areola. In the same process, the width can also be reduced.
