Benefits Of Correcting Droopy Eyelids

A droopy eyelid or ptosis are commonly known as an upper eyelid that droops. If the edge of the lid droops down enough, a person’s eyesight is affected and, in some cases, can cause hindrance to their vision.

In more severe cases of droopy eyelid, some may need to tilt their head back or use their forehead muscles to lift the droopy eyelid out of the way.

Causes Of Droopy Eyelid

Aging is the most well-known reason for droopy eyelids. As individuals age, the eyelid muscles steadily lose their elasticity and tone essentially through wear and tear, and inevitably failed to lift the upper eyelids.

Injury, neurological conditions, (for example, stroke, and brain tumor) and neuromuscular disorders may likewise cause droopy eyelids. There are also cases where kids are born with ptosis due to ineffectively developed eyelid muscles. Contact lens users are likewise susceptible to droopy eyelids due to constant over stretching of the eyelids.

Droopy eyelids can also be related to a drooping eyebrow (brow ptosis) and the presence of excess eyelid skin (dermatochalasis). In certain cases, the eyelid connective tissues are weakened, as such the normal orbital tissues become relaxed and may form a bulge, causing puffiness in the upper eyelids. This condition can affect one eye or both and obstruct a person’s vision or alter the physical appearance.

Patients can anticipate the numerous advantages droopy eyelid surgery can offer. Regardless of whether one can have a mild, moderate, or more serious case of the droopy eyelid, after the surgery, they can observe noticeable improvements aesthetically and functionally which can progressively have impacts on their confidence.

Droopy Eyelid Symptoms

The most obvious sign of ptosis is the drooping upper eyelid. Depending on how severely the eyelid droops, people with ptosis are often concerned about the cosmetic appearance. Vision may also be affected depending on how low the eyelid is relative to the pupil.

Individuals with ptosis may find themselves experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Looking tired and sleepy despite being well-rested
  • The increased heaviness of the eyelid
  • Impaired vision
  • Tilting of the head to see better
  • The constant raising of the eyebrow to lift the eyelid
  • Headache due to forehead muscle strain and eyestrain

The degree of droopiness is individual. If one thinks that they may have ptosis, a great way for self-assessment is to compare a recent photo with one from the past to see if the eyelid position has changed.

As one gets older, there’s a little bit more stretch, and that compensatory action doesn’t work as well. It’s very common for people who have a long history of ptosis to say it’s worse at the end of the day (heavy eyelids).

Some people with ptosis are particularly bothered if the eye that is being affected is the dominant eye.

What Is Droopy Eyelid Correction?

Droopy eyelid correction involves tightening of the levator or Muller muscles on the upper eyelid. The procedure is often referred to as Ptosis Correction Surgery or Blepharoptosis. A surgical correction to tighten the muscle is also the most effective way of correcting droopy eyelids.

Depending on the severity of the droopy eyelid and the amount of excess skin or fat tissue, individuals may be recommended one of the treatment options below.

Droopy Eyelid Treatment Options

Incision

Incisional Ptosis Correction

Incisional Ptosis Correction is usually recommended for those with more severe droopy eyelids, or in cases where removal of excess skin and fat is recommended. In this procedure, an incision is made on the eyelids and the eyelid muscles are stitched higher, effectively shortening them.

Any excess fat and skin can be removed via the same incision to depuff the eyelids. Apart from addressing droopy eyelids, the removal of skin and fat helps to recontour the eyelids and create bigger and more youthful looking eyes.

Non-Incision Ptosis Correction

In the case of a Non-Incisional Ptosis Correction, a thread is inserted into the eyelid via small slits along the eyelids and the eye-opening muscles and Muller muscle are tightened with a suture at the back of the eyelid to reinforce the muscles. The tightening of the muscles allows the eyelids to raise higher when opened and transform one’s appearance to look more awake.

There will be little external scarring since the slits are very small. Hence, resulting in lesser bruising, swelling and allowing a shorter recovery time as compared to the incisional method.

Should The Procedure Be Done Under Local Anaesthesia Or Sedation?

For the droopy eyelid treatment surgery, one has the option of doing the procedure under local anesthesia. The anesthetic medication is administered through injections on the eyelids which numbs the area. Even though one remains awake throughout the procedure, they will not feel any pain or discomfort.

Those who prefer a more comfortable experience can choose to opt for light sedation. In this case, sedative drugs will be administered through an IV drip and one will remain asleep throughout the procedure.

Benefits Of Droopy Eyelid Correction

Our plastic surgeon at Dream Plastic Surgery Singapore regularly performs droopy eyelid correction surgery and has helped many patients enjoy the improvements it brings. After droopy eyelid surgery, patients can look forward to the many benefits it can offer. Some of the benefits include:

1. Turn sleepy eyes into greater and more brilliant looking eyes

Droopy Eyelid Surgery helps to create a more appealing eye shape by expanding eye height and pupil exposure. Those changes can have an impact in the eye shape and size, resulting in more alluring and bigger looking eyes. The improvements also make one appear more alert and well rested.

2. Reduce the dependence on the brow muscles and slow down new arrangement of forehead wrinkles

Droopy Eyelids correction reinforces the levator (eye-opening) muscles. The correction surgery restores the eyelid muscle functions, allowing eyelid movements to be controlled using the levator muscles rather than relying on other muscles groups around the forehead area. This significantly lessens dependency and strain on forehead muscles, preventing development of wrinkles from compensatory eyebrow-raising or habitual squinting.

3. Experience improvements in vision

Other than improving the appearance, droopy eyelid correction reestablishes the field of vision and reduce the feeling of heaviness on the eyelid. Most patients are able to see better, feel more youthful and subsequently improving their personal satisfaction.

4. Recreate double eyelids while fixing droopy eyelids in one procedure

Droopy eyelids cause double eyelid crease to become less defined as the eyelid ages and sags. The droopy eyelid procedure can fix the functional aspects of the eye, as well as recreate a neat and defined double eyelid crease, solving two problems at once.

5. Achieve a more rejuvenated and younger look

Most patients looking for eyelid surgery are interested in improving their appearance. This is one of the main benefits of the procedure. The plastic surgeon can remove some of the excess skin that is present. Removal of excess skin will improve the appearance of wrinkles on the upper eyelid and eradicate excess skin drooping over the eye which may make them appear smaller.

If puffiness is present on the upper eyelids, the surgeon can often correct that in the same procedure. Removal of excess fat tissues takes away that heavy or stuffy look. It also restores a tauter and flat upper eyelid contour, a characteristic which many associate with youth and beauty.

6. Improve Self-Esteem

It’s not uncommon for people to put a lot of focus on their appearance. Even if one believes in the mantra, “beauty is only skin deep”, they may not feel great about themselves when they observe their flaws in the mirror.

While eyelid surgery isn’t going to correct deep-seated psychological issues, it can certainly turn back to clock and return a more youthful appearance that may contribute to a person’s loss of self-esteem.
