Most cosmetic surgeries can make permanent changes to your appearance, especially a rhinoplasty, often referred to as a ‘nose job’.
Well, perhaps you have been dissatisfied with your nose for the longest time, or maybe you experience breathing difficulties; either way, a nose augmentation surgery may be an option for you. While you may already have an idea about what a nose job is all about, here are 3 common misconceptions you should be aware of before you decide to have your surgery.
1) “ALL NOSE IMPLANTS ARE MADE OF SILICON”
Nose augmentation can be done with implants alone, using bone graft, or either one of them in combination with your natural cartilage. Each of the techniques below produces a long-lasting and natural appearance with a low risk of infection.
1. Augmentation with L-shaped Implant
The use of L-shaped silicone implants are one of the most common ways to augment the nose. Depending on your expectation and nose structure, your surgeon will choose an implant size that fits proportionally. When using this technique, this one-step procedure will take care of the nose bridge and tip projection.
2. Augmentation with I-shaped Implant and Cartilage
Unlike the L-shaped implant, an I-shaped implant is solely used for enhancing the height of your nose bridge. It involves an additional step to create a defined and well projected nose tip which is usually done using your natural cartilage. The advantage of this technique is that it gives you the ability to manoeuvre your nose tip like how you would with a natural nose, which is not possible with an L-shaped implant. This option is most popular among our patients as they feel even more natural using their own cartilage and less of the implants.
3. Augmentation with Bone Graft and Cartilage
This is ideal for patients who do not want any foreign materials as implants, or for those whose bodies reject implants. The bone graft is used to raise the nose bridge and cartilage is used to enhance the nose tip.
2) “MY NOSE WILL LOOK FAKE AFTER SURGERY”
You may be afraid that your dream nose will look fake after plastic surgery. We understand. However, if you choose a professional and experienced plastic surgeon, he would know how to strike a balance so your nose is proportional to the rest of your face and the end-result does not look plastic or fake.
3) I CAN GET THE ‘CELEBRITY NOSE’ THAT I WANT
Well, everyone’s facial structure is different and the concept of ‘one size fits all’ certainly does not apply to nose surgeries. A particular type or shape of nose might look good on a celebrity but this does not mean it will look good on you as well.
We believe that a successful nose surgery is achieved when it is tailored to enhance the overall proportion of your face, bringing out your very own unique facial features and making a person look more aesthetically appealing.
