Here’s what you need to know about medical grade lasers.
MYTH #1: ALL LASERS PERFORMED REGARDLESS OF EXPERTISE PRODUCE THE SAME RESULTS.
FACT: Lasers are classified into 2 main categories: medical grade and non-medical grade lasers. Medical grade lasers allow doctors to customize the settings based on your skin concerns. An in-depth understanding of the skin anatomy, as well as technicalities of the laser and its limitations are required to be able to design laser protocols that are safe, effective and tailored to your needs.
A laser in the wrong hands can cause serious damage. Hence, it is important that you consult with a qualified doctor who is able to assess your skin condition and calibrate the laser treatments for concerns.
The non-medical grade brands that are handled by therapists don’t have equivalent parameters and therefore, they may not be able to target all your concerns.
MYTH #2: ALL LONG TERM LASER TREATMENTS THIN THE SKIN.
FACT: Most lasers are either ablative or non-ablative. An ablative laser targets the surface of the skin by stripping off the outermost layer of the skin. They require more downtime and when done on a long term basis, the skin does become thinner over time.
Non-ablative lasers penetrate into the skin to trigger collagen and elastin fibre regeneration. They generally have little to no downtime. Collagen and elastin fibres deplete with age and these lasers actually help to regenerate them. This helps to thicken the important layers of the skin so it is less susceptible to wrinkles or sagging as you age.
MYTH #3: LASER TREATMENTS CAN ONLY BE PERFORMED ON FAIR SKIN.
FACT: There are laser technologies that can accommodate a wide range of skin tones and are capable of producing good rejuvenation results with sequential treatments. You will have to seek a professional’s advice on the lasers that are suitable for your skin tone and if they can help to address your concerns.
MYTH #4: ONCE YOU START DOING LASERS, STOPPING TREATMENTS WILL CAUSE THE SKIN TO DETERIORATE RAPIDLY.
FACT: A laser treatment does not produce dependency, but rather, it improves the skin quality over the course of your treatment. Once your skin concerns are addressed, you may choose to stop or continue as a form of maintenance. Without laser treatments, your skin will not deteriorate faster than it would have before the treatments, but you simply return to your natural ageing process.
