Can You Really Shrink Your Pores?

Many people have issues with their pores and living in a tropical climate makes things worse. So can we really make our pores appear finer?

Yes! But it takes dedication and patience to see improvements. We are all too familiar with the cleanse – tone – serum – moisturizer – sun protection regime, but choosing the right products and being diligent about your skin care routine can make a difference. Getting the right product for each step will help reduce those nasty blackheads and shrink your pores for a finer complexion.

STEP 1: CLEANSING & EXFOLIATION

Proper cleansing can help to remove dirt and other impurities from the pores which are responsible for clogging, black heads and other unsightly skin concerns. When your pores are unclogged, other skin care products can penetrate your skin better.

Washing your face twice daily, once in the morning and another in the evening will help to minimize dirt and impurities trapped in your pores. If you have very oily skin, it may be necessary for you to do a mid-day cleanse to bring your sebum level under control. When choosing a face wash, you should consider your skin type, and get one that is tailored for your needs. To cleanse better, you may also get a little help from home care cleansing devices such as the Clarisonic Mia.

Our skin cells are regenerating every day and dead cells usually accumulate on the surface of your skin, dulling your complexion. To prevent dead skin cells from building up, it is important to exfoliate once or twice a week so new skin cells can surface and give you a better glow. There are many types of exfoliants in the market and you can choose between beaded scrubs or chemical ones. Chemical exfoliants like Alpha Hydroxy Acids or Beta Hydroxy Acids are great for acne or sensitive skin. If you prefer beaded scrubs, go for one where the beads have round edges as they are gentler on the skin. Unlike nut-based scrubs, those round beads do not cause abrasion or micro lacerations which leaves your skin prone to infections.

1. dr.dream Hydramemory Deep Cleansing Foam
2. Dream Formula Peeling Gel

STEP 2: TONING

Pores usually remain open after cleansing and you should apply toner if you really want to tighten your pores. Many people have the misconception that toners’ only benefit is to tighten pores. In fact, a good toner not only tightens your pores but also removes excess impurities, promotes pH balance, controls sebum production, hydrates and preps the skin for better absorption. When you use a good toner, you should gradually experience fewer blackheads, better levels of sebum production and hence, a finer complexion.

Now that you’ve realized the importance of a good toner, you should spend just as much attention looking for a toner as you do for serums and moisturizers.

1. dr.dream Advanced Facial Treatment Toner

STEP 3: SERUM

Serums can help tighten your pores. Serums with peptides help with collagen regeneration and is good for individuals who wish to take control of their ageing process early. So what has collagen or ageing got to do with your pores? As we age, our skin loses volume and elasticity. Hence the tissues around our skin cells are not as full as before. The loose edges around our pores make them appear larger. With the help of a collagen regenerating serum, the skin produces more collagen to plump and thicken the tissues around your pores, shrinking the pore opening so they look finer and less obvious. If you have oily skin, use an oil control serum on top of your anti-ageing serum and it may enhance your pore refining results even more. When layering your products, always start with the one with a lighter consistency.

Recommended product:
1. dr.dream Advanced Facial Treatment Serum

STEP 4: MOISTURIZER

A good moisturizer penetrates into the superficial layers of your skin, hydrating and strengthening your skin’s natural protection barrier. It is important to be able to tell the difference between a good and bad moisturizer. An effective moisturizer should leave your skin feeling smoother and plumper in the morning.

It is important to keep your skin well hydrated, regardless of your skin type. Dry or dehydrated skin can stress your oil glands to over produce sebum. Over-production of sebum may cause dirt to trap or clog your pores, causing them to swell and appear larger than they should be. So slather on and lock in that much needed moisture your skin needs.

Recommended products:
1. dr.dream Hydramemory Deep Active Moisturizer
2. dr.dream Advanced Facial Treatment Cream

STEP 5: SUN PROTECTION

Sun damage accumulates with age and affects your skin’s elasticity, causing your pores to look bigger. Over-exposure from the sun makes your skin thicken, causing the skin cells to collect around the edge of your pores, forcing their openings larger.
Applying sun screen is more than just an anti-ageing mechanism, it also helps to keep your complexion more refined in the long run. Choose a sunblock that gives you protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and is non-comedogenic so it keeps your pores free from clogging.

Recommended products:
1. dr.dream Urban Protective Sun Cream SPF40 PA++
2. Heliocare Advanced SPF 90 Gel
3. Heliocare 360d Gel Oil-free SPF 50
